Special permit mating??
Finnish Cat Federation Board has approved a special permit mating Sacred Birman x Siberian Cat http://birmanmix.vuodatus.net/
It is written on this page: It took a long time, years before I realized that the breed I loved so much might not be as healthy as I thought. In particular, the FIP, HCM, PKD, took many the cats. Sacred Birman has been bred very close in 70 - and 80 centuries, when they used for example Persian and Siamese. Now the lines are breed too closely, and we have arrived at a situation where the the lines are inbreeded with over 30. It is a pity that the breed should suffer from immune related illnesses and other problems. This again is probably due to the narrow gene pool.
What do we really know about the Siberian cat when used in such experiments? If the Siberian cat will become like salt and flour in baked goods? Something you can use in all other breeds, when serious mistakes have been done by breeders? There is another aspect of the case. If we think of the sick kittens who are born, and the suffering they have. We have an obligation as breeders, to make sure no cats are suffering. That fact can speak for this mixing. But there are several factors. Not all breeders of Sacred Birman agree that they have major health problem in the breed. If it is correct, then it is a scandal that the Siberian is used in these experiments. Some years ago we were very conservative. No mixing was allowed. Now it seems that one is more liberal. I am afraid that it is the worst enemy we have. To be too liberal with the Siberian cat to ultimately allow everything.

Hi! Just want to say few comments as i'm the one that has this permis . I'm not taking anything from siberians, there will not be any damage to your breed. Kittens from this mix will be used only for breeding birmans. I will use 1-2 kittens from first generation and mate them back to birmans.
Kittens will not suffer in any way. Birman kittens are not normally suffering as you descride. There is FIP, HCM and PKD but is there really a breed thas is pure from these? Siberians are quite healthy breed, you can still use novises, so it was the first breed that i thought when i started this. You should be proud of this. And as i said before, i'm not causing any harm to your breed and kittens will have good pet homes.
I hope you siberian breeders can understand that we are just making good for our loved cats. We are making healthier kittens and that should be primarity goal to all breeders.

I have written my own thoughts on this topic. It is not the first time this comes up. Siberians has become used with more breeds than the Birmans. I understand your basic idea of making the breed healthier. At the beginning of the 1900s breeders used selective breeding between Siamese and Persian color point with white socks. In mixed litters were those with white socks considered birman, while those with very brown socks were considered Persians. Here the idea was good and planned, since the breeds were closer together in common purpose, and colors.When mixing the Siberian you get domestic blood into the Birman. To increase genetic diversity It is good, but that's all you do. It is the most important step with regard to your health problem. But you have to start all over again to select again. standard is strict on Birmans. Stricter than Siberians, where patterns and colors don`t mean that much. I do not criticize you but share my thoughts. If we, who are working with Siberians think this is ok? As I said, your basic idea is good, but you must have several Siberian Cats for such a project. What happens then? I think a number of Siberian People will react negatively.
For example, we will use also EUR x SBI kittens to this so this one litter is not all. This is how we get variety to our lines, one mating will not solve anything. Birman socks and countlets will be back after couple of generations, type is quite close. Of course i have to work to have generation that looks like birmans but i have a plan that i think will lead us there.
I hope that you take this all as compliment to your breed. Your breed is so beautifull, strong, lively and healthy so it is priviledge to me that i can have a little bit of your breed to mine.
